In 1829, Decatur became an independent city under the leadership of George Rogers Clark. By 1840, it had 12 buildings and a population of 300. In 1865, Decatur was annexed by Atlanta as part of the resulting Civil War settlement in North Georgia. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, Decatur declined until it regained its prior status as an independent city in 1925. Today, Decatur is home to several high schools and a small business district.
