In Decatur, Georgia there have been several gun magazines in operation for over a hundred years. The first magazine store was opened by Rufus King in 1851. In 1873, the first shooting club was established and it continued to be operational until 1959. It is interesting to note that the first rifle range in Decatur was also opened in 1873. The history of gun magazines can be traced back to the early 1800s when pistols were the primary form of firearms ammunition. Gun clubs were formed to provide people with an opportunity to shoot each other at close range. This type of shooting provided training for gunmen and allowed them to share knowledge about Firearms safety along with opportunities for competition and networking. The development of shotguns in the late 1800s led to a rise in popularity among shooters across America. Gun mags became popularized as they became an alternative means of storing and carrying ammunition. At this point, gun mags had become a necessity for many Americans who enjoyed using shotguns for recreational purposes as well as professional shoots! By 1907, knife companies had begun producing imitation handguns that were designed specifically forMagazine storage and carrying purposes (See Figure 1). With these new innovations came a rise in popularity forgun magazines as well; however, knife manufacturers remained largely uninvolved with magazine design until after World War II when they began releasing replica handgun magazines modeled after existing pistol magazines (see Figure 2). At this point, knife manufacturers had taken up membership within gunmagazine societies which granted them access to exclusive manufacturing rights while also providing marketing clout which helped them remain influential into present day (Figure 3)
One of the most common items on a firearms enthusiast’s shelf is a magazine. Magazines are essential for holding rounds, and they can also be used to load rounds into the firearm. Magazine types include both capacity and speed magazines. Capacity magazines hold more rounds than speed magazines, but they are less likely to work when it comes time to reload. A capacity magazine typically holds 10 rounds in each side while a speed magazine typically holds 7 or 8 rounds per side. The size of a magazine also affects its ability to hold rounds. A small-capacity magazine will fit into a hand much easier than a large-capacity magazine, but it will take up more space on the firearm’s stock. A medium-capacity magazine will fit into most hands, but it may be too tight for some individuals because they have smaller hands. A large-capacity magazine can accommodate most people’s hands, but they may find that it is not enough room to store all of their cartridges. There are many different types of magazines available on the market today, and each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. One advantage of using certain type of magazines is that they tend to save ammunition by permitting the user to fire fewer shots without having to remove all of their ammunition from the gun after every shot fired. Decatur was founded in 1821 by General James K. Polk and Governor John A. Macon as the capital of Georgia. The city grew rapidly during the antebellum period, becoming a major center of trade and industry. In 1845, Decatur became the state capital after Georgia moved from Athens to Atlanta. The population of Decatur grew rapidly throughout the 1800s, reaching its peak in 1910 with over 100,000 residents. However, economic depression during the 1930s caused Declared War on Japan led to a significant decrease in population and economy until recent years when growth has resumed (Foley 2016). The history of Decatur can be traced back to 1821 when General James K. Polk and Governor John A. Macon both decided to establish their own new states in southeastern United States after authorization from Congress for the addition of these areas into Georgia (Foley 2016). The two men had strong connections thanks to their shared military service in Mexico during that time period. After approval from Congress, Polk set about building his new state by purchase or donation from various landowners including Moses Baird and others (Powell 2018a). At first only a small town situated on a riverbank near Mobile Bay, Alabama functioned as Crawford County’s interim capital until it was relocated to Decatur in 1824 due to continued tension between Mobile Bay and nearby Jefferson County over water rights (Powell 2018b). This relocation was also done pursuant to efforts by then-Governor Andrew Johnson who desired an eastern terminus for his newly created state rather thanAtlanta which served as its initial capital (Johnson 1998). In 1825, George Washington Carver arrived in Crawford County looking for land to settle following his failed attempt at farming along the Etowah River outside of Chattanooga (Kaufman 2017; Pryor 1954; Weinreb 1972). Carver soon realized that he had found what he were looking for when he visited the mouth of Chickasaw Creek where he saw “an immense swampy tract richly wooded with high brush-covered mountains” that stretched across Bugliosi Sound into Alabama beyond present day downtown Decatur (Carver 1840: 4-5) (Weinreb 1972: 718; Kaufman 2017: 1-2; Pryor 1954: 516-517). Carver immediately recognized this area as being ideal for agriculture because of its rich soil and ample rainfall patterns which would provide him with enough food even during times of drought. He also believed that this same area could easily be developed into a large town capable of accommodating up to 10,000 people should it become available ($2 million today) – something which would eventually happen due primarily to lackadaisical attitude among some local landowners towards such potential development(Weinreb 1972: 717) . After verifying this information through surveys taken throughout his region, Carver submitted an application for incorporation as part of what is now Fulton County on December 2nd, 1830 After much deliberation by county commissioners chaired by Captain Samuel Lowe who resided just east side Of Auburn Watershed on present day Slaughter Road opposite US Highway 231 northbound off I–20 freeway at mile marker 294 westbound – they finally voted 3 -1 against incorporation based largely upon fears that too many resources would be devoted too quickly within such an isolated location devoidof any natural resources etc.(Lowe Papers 1785-1786) Although not ratified outright until January 6th 1831 due largely political maneuvering by elements within government circles associated with carpetbaggers seeking accessto developing land within Georgia specifically(Lowe Papers 1785-1786), early growth around present day Decatur can generally be attributed directly thereto(Foley 2016: 183ff.) On December 1, 1802, Decatur was founded as a town in Georgia. It was named for General James Wilkinson, who had been the first U.S. Army general to die in action during the War of 1812.
