Today, many residents still live close to their jobs or Main Street village while enjoying trips out into neighboring communities for shopping or nightlife options; all told, there are more than 65 restaurants and bars located within blocks of downtown Decatur proper alone! After being merged with other cities in 1903, Decatur experienced rapid growth throughout the 20th century, becoming one of the most populous cities in Georgia. In recent years, however, it has seen some decline in population and economic fortunes. The history of Decatur begins with its establishment on the banks of the Decatur River by General George Washington during the War of 1812. Washington named his new town for himself and designated it as Fort Decatur, which served as a base for operations against Canada. The town quickly grew and soon became an important military stronghold on Georgian Bay. In 1817, Colonel Edward Everett Hale chose Decatur as site for a new courthouse due to its strategic location between Atlanta and Savannah along both rivers. By 1830,Decatur had become an established community with a population of around 1,000 people. In 1834, when Marietta began developing into a larger city nearby (due to growing trade along the Chattahoochee River),decided to move his business operations out of Atlanta and into what is now known as downtown Decatur (later renamed National Mall). This decision helped spur further development within what would become today’s downtown area including many buildings still standing from that time: The First Baptist Church (1834), Masonic Temple (1835), State Capitol Building (1836-37), City Hall Annex (1839-40) – all still extant today! Additionally notable structures at this time include Stonington Hotel which operated from 1840-48; Peachtree School built between 1840-46; Bankhead Brewery built between 1850-60;and Ponce de Leon Theatre opened in 1860! During Reconstruction following America’s return from World War II, deciduous trees were planted throughout much of southern Georgia due to spruce bark being needed for building materials such as stucco and siding on Postwar homes. By 1959 deciduous trees had been largely eliminated across most parts ofGeorgia due to changing climate conditions; however some valuable specimens remain today such as white oak tree outside City Hall Annex – oldest livingoak tree eastof Mississippi!
