In 1865 Longstreet sold his interest in The Old Gadsden Road operation to Aiken Railroad Company for $1 million dollars which created new transportation opportunities throughout south Alabama In 1886 when Decatur's first telephone service started wirelessly across southAlabama wires were laid down behind present day Ponce de Leon Mall downtown When US Route 301 designation was established it ran concurrent with US Route 99 through downtown until it rejoined US Route 99 later that year

The first permanent settler in what would become Decatur was James Robertson who built a cabin in 1817 on the site of present day Decatur High School. In 1821 Robertson's son Alexander purchased a grant from the Creek Nation for 8 square miles (20 km2) extending along the Chattahoochee River to what is now Decatur Junction. In 1824, John Ross and his kin set up a home nearpresent day Five Points on the east bank of the Chattahoochee River and began trading with Indians there for goods such as water buffalo and corn. They also raised horses and cattle there until 1830 when they left for Illinois to take up land grants west of the Mississippi River. The first school in what would become Decatur was organized on February 14th, 1827 by Rev. William Waddell with students from Lawrenceville School District #1 under instruction from Mr. Fenton Wiley during a week-long stay at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Cumberland Road northeast of town limits.. The village had two stores, one blacksmith shop and two Methodist churches which served as meeting places for local farmers and businessmen before it became known as "Decatur" because General Beauregard's cavalry camped there during his march through Alabama against Native Americans just south of town in October 17h1863 while Sherman was invading Georgia It wasn't until January 1st 1870 that Decatur had its own post office with Elisha Pritchard as First Postmaster after general James Hogg donated US $5 postage stamps to be used at that point On December 3rd 1861 Union Major General George Armstrong Custer led 4 companies’ worth of soldiers downriver from Chattanooga to attack Confederate forces under Field Marshal Robert Ewell at Chickamauga Creek where he lost many men including Captain Hinds commanding Company G2 U S A Rangers . Aftermath several days long battle resulted in over 1400 casualties including 150 officers killed or missing , among them were Generals Custer himself (who died 2 days later) & Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Dickson (Wounded three times). Some reports claim that about 30% or more all infantry losses were due to artillery fire throughout engagement which may have been most destructive given accuracy rating of field guns then available . On December 9th 1861 General Braxton Bragg finally arrived downstream from Chattanooga with 2 brigades leading 10 thousand men supported by 5 cannons each consisting mostly muzzleloading rifled rifles called “garrison guns” ) resulting in another bloodbath taking place near where units commander LtGen Braxton Bragg marched his brigade into action prior marching back out 400 yards across open ground filled with dead & dying Confederate troops Referred to locally as “ Bloody Sunday ” today”), but this time around no major carnage took place outside city limits other than some scattered homes destroyed or forced conversion into military camps while thousands more civilians were sheltering inside buildings including many women and children suffering continuous shelling & concussion damage often causing death or serious injury without any protection ). This event forever changed how Georgians view their war experiences thereby helping lay foundation for Bulloch County Flag flyover today .) There are numerous contributing factors surrounding this pivotal moment within Georgians' history such as: 1) increased interest within states following Civil War outcome; 2) difficulties faced by generals implementing strategy; 3) American role played directly/indirectly; 4) relationships between various leaders/ organizations - federal government being central player ); 5) overall political climate during early years post-war period.; 6) unique dynamics surrounding industry/commerce development within rural area.) The following year on January 7th 1862 Union Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest burned all bridges spanning Mobile Bay effective immediately suspending navigation upstream making it difficult for small boats access river interior allowing Confederate forces passage much like restrictions applied subsequent year at Battle Of Antietam ." Consequently nearly 200 families living downstream were either evacuated inland or taken prisoner downstream during pontoon bridge burningOperation Bankhead ." Yankees considered this an act amounting to genocide since these natives were forcibly removed without proper compensation .) Additionally actions such as Operation Crossroads followed tried restrict resupply channels allowing Confederacy access essential for operations farther upstream .)

The town was named after General John Oglethorpe and was moved from Muscatine to Decatur in 1802. In 1812, Decatur became an independent county and on January 1, 1819, it merged with Braxton County. In 1800, there were only six families living in what is now Decatur. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in the community. On October 20, 1830, a fire destroyed most of the buildings in what is now downtownDecatur. However, many of the people who lived in surrounding homes managed to rebuild and continue to live here until 1865 when they all left for Chattanooga because of the American Civil War.
