Decatur is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 20,528 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and home to the Decatur State Fairgrounds. The city was laid out in 1813 by John Richardson on land that he donated to the state of Georgia. In 1847, Decatur was incorporated as a city by an act of the General Assembly. The city became a center for education after it became part of the Trussville District School System in 1922. After World War II, Decatur grew more prosperous thanks to its location near Atlanta and its status as a manufacturing center for aerospace products. Decatur was founded in 1802 by James Decatur and the original town site was located on the east bank of the Chattahoochee River. The first courthouse and jail were built in 1805, while a smallpox epidemic in 1807 caused the death of many people in the city. In 1811, Decatur became a state capital. On December 12, 1812, President James K. Polk issued an Executive Order creating a military district comprising all of Georgia that would be under Ulysses S. Grant’s command. The city served as a station on Grant’s route from Chattanooga to Savannah during his campaigns against Confederate General Robert E. Lee and for two years after his surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
