Dalton is a city in Chattahoochee County, Georgia, United States. The population was 26,642 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Chattahoochee County. Dalton is known for its Dalton State Airport, which serves as both a commercial and military airport. The first settler in Dalton was James Couch who arrived in 1824. In 1828, two brothers named John Couch and Daniel Dixon founded the town of Athens on the west side of what is now Dalton Street. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 had a population of over 100 people. In 1835, Dalton's first school was built on what is now Elmwood Avenue. In 1840, Governor Jeptha Gibbs ordered detached parts of Chattahoochee County to be formed into new counties (Chattahoochee and Lovejoy). The land around present-day Dalton was included within Chattahoochee County and it became an important agricultural center with many mills being built near the river. By 1850, there were over 350 residents living in Daltontown according to one report; however, by 1860 only 60 people lived there due to Rapid Expansionist policies enacted by President Abraham Lincoln during his Kansas–Nebraska Act of April 14th that year. Dalton's rapid growth stopped when railroads reached Atlanta in 1847; however, local entrepreneurs did not give up on their city idea and began developing businesses such as hotels and stores along Elmwood Avenue between Powell Boulevard (now Kirby Drive) and 15th Street NW until well into the 20th century. A major factor that slowed this development was lack of streetlights which made business difficult to operate at night without headlights or other light sources; furthermore, transportation options were limited at this time because horse-drawn carts were the only means for goods to be transported long distances throughout Chattahoochee County without having them delivered to residents' homes or businesses – this restriction led some merchants to abandon their downtown efforts altogether after railroad service arrived in 1861 One example of how resident effort kept things alive during these tough times is when entrepreneur/builder Gentry Waddell refurbished several blocks north down Elmwood Avenue from his old mercantile store onto Trade Street starting in 1865 as an early example of "downtown revivalism". After years of hard work he finally opened his own grocery store on Commerce Street just east of today's Walmart Supercenter shortly after World War II ended . This typeof entrepreneurialism continued through much more recent downtown resurgences such as that started by restaurateur Donnie Daniels followinginchang moves within CobbCounty beginning in late 2000s ; eventually all high-scale retail redevelopment has taken place southward along Ponce de Leon Ave., eastward along 12th St., northwestward along I-285 In 1951 voters passed a referendum creating Chatanooga Regional Airport with landing rights granted permanently to Cincinnati Air National Guard Base #2 located adjacent to present day Hawkins Field & Highway 99W thereby making Dalton eligible for state assistance which led DHonald Hargrave president/CEO Delta Airlines parent company DeltaAir Lines Incorporatedto provide $1 million per annum tax break annually until 1984 for operations hangar expansion purposes associated with providing air traffic control services essential for Hundreds thousand passenger airplane movements each year commenceing Spring 1983 thru Fall 1984
