In 1868, Dalton was founded as a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. The town was named after General James K. Polk who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as president from 1845 to 1849. In 1922, Dalton became the seat of government for Georgians within the newly created state of Georgia. The city has been its current incarnation since 1959. As a small town, Dalton had little opportunity to export its products and so it remained primarily an agricultural community until the early 20th century when industry began to grow in the area around Dalton. By 1900, manufacturing plants were being established throughout central and eastern Georgia and Dalton became known as one of these areas for industrial production. Cotton mills dominated this period with many residents working at these plants long hours during summer months. However, by World War I industrial production had begun to decline due to technological advancements which made goods more durable and efficient outside of warring countries such as Germany or Belgium. Dalton's economy again began to boom during World War II when industries such as aircraft manufacture sprang up in nearby Statesboro and Gwinnett counties due to wartime shortages of materials abroad. When the war ended, many jobs were lost in those industries but Dalton still experienced rapid growth thanks to new businesses that came online during the post-war period including retail chains like Sears Roebuck and JCPenney along with service companies like National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) which placed a large focus on marketing television shows across all types of media outlets statewide before they went off air several years later). After two decades of significant growth on local levels, what followed was a leveling off period where job opportunities decreased while rents increased slightly over time leading people into downtown areas near Interstate 285 for shopping malls or other services that could provide them with stability both economically and physically (this type of development is now known as "the core". Today there are few if any businesses left within Downtown Dalton - most have moved out onto Peachtree Street or Interstate 285 itself where rent continues to be high). Additionally, much attention has recently been paid towards revitalizing Downtown Dalton through various events (e.g., Arts Alive! 2015; Ragin' Cajuns Music Festival 2016; etc.) without having results yet despite repeated invitations from Mayor Emanuel who promises Citizendium will make a big impact on downtown life once he takes office next year

In 1957-1958 during the height of African American activism there was large demonstrations against white flight from Montgomery County due to Jim Crow segregation laws enacted during Reconstruction; many key citizens including Mayor John Rankin Green joined civil rights organizations such as SNCC before he became mayor later that year after winning an election landslide against his predecessor Bull Connor with almost 60%OfThe Votes cast During this time also saw construction begin on nearby Turner Field which would come to be known as "the home field"of Atlanta Braves baseball teams starting in 1966

In 1825, it became the capital of the Alabama Territory. In 1861, it was the first city in Alabama to secede from the Confederate States of America. The city was burned down by Union forces on April 12, 1865, following its Battle of Dalton.
