Dalton, Georgia is located in the state of Georgia and it is also home to the National Rifle Association (NRA). The NRA has been in Dalton since 1871. The NRA was founded as a reaction to laws in other states that prohibited citizens from owning firearms. In 1895, the NRA helped create the Georgia State Militia and continues to play a role in its organization today. The city of Dalton was founded by two brothers, George W. Dalton and John L. Dalton, in 1881. Duffey’s Tavern on Broad Street was the first business established in Dalton. It was open for business on December 2, 1881. In 1907, Congress passed an act that allowed Georgians to own weapons without having to go through government licensing process. This law became effective on January 1, 1908. During World War I, the NRA played a vital role in helping patriotic Americans arm themselves and fight against Germany and Austria-Hungary. After World War I ended, many Georgians decided they no longer needed guns and sold their pistols or rifles to friends or family members who needed them during peacetime. On July 14, 1892, Dalton's only grocery store was destroyed by a fire. The blaze began in the early morning hours and quickly spread to the store's six other buildings. Despite the extensive damage, the town's citizens managed to salvage food and clothing from the stores before firefighters arrived. The fire also caused some $5,000 in damage.

In 1865, two generals ( George Kennett and Ulysses S Grant) visited Dalton while on their way to battle at Marietta outside of Atlanta; they were so impressed with the small community that they ordered all officers of their army stationed there to build homes within five miles (8 km). This led to what is now known as "The Generation Gap". By 1870, there were over 200 homes in Dalton – more than any other town in Cobb County – thanks largely to gifts from prominent citizens such as Jeptha Hillyer, Judge Augustus Ewell Ruffin and Colonel Robert Fulton Wright Sr.. One reason for this growth was the fact that schools for boys only began operation here in 1872; before then most children had to be educated privately or via correspondence courses offered by local teachers' societies. Dalton quickly became known as one of the best places for farmers throughout Cobb County because its fertile soils allowed for large crops - including cotton - regardless of rainfall or cold weather conditions. This contributed both to the town's prosperity during its early years and also made it difficult for outsiders such as white supremacists who wanted to exclude Black Americans from membership in society proper. Despite this history turbulence sometimes ensued due directly or indirectly to race: For example, when members of the black community started buying property here they did not want white supremacists trying To map out their boundaries so they coulddevelopmentally control them into " Negro Towns." In 1903 construction began on what would become known as "The White House", which served as home base for President Grover Cleveland during his term of office (1893-1901). When he left office he sold the house back to complete developers but never lived there again himself preferring instead Windsor Hills which still stands today across I-285 from downtown Atlanta
