However, during the Civil War (1861-1865), Dalton was fiercely loyal to Confederate forces and saw much destruction and loss of life. On February 22nd 1865, Union soldiers stormed into town carrying news that Confederate General Robert E. Lee had surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. Many people in Dalton were heartbroken at this news; however, most likely because they had no choice given their location within Confederate territory
Dalton was founded in 1823 by James Dalton and Methodist missionaries. The town grew slowly until the Civil War, when it became a major center of production for cotton. After the war, Dalton developed as a commercial and cultural center, becoming known for its arts and crafts. In the 1920s, Dalton became a significant cotton gin producer, thanks to its location on the Chattahoochee River.
