Some white residents also moved to Dalton during this time period because they were unable to find work outside of their homes or because they desired more independent living than they had while living within Confederate territory at that time. In 1947, then-Mayor Donnie Wickersham spearheaded efforts to rename the city after Agent Milt Raymond Cox Jr., who had played an important role in helping whites overcome discrimination during World War II and later served as Principal Chief of Cherokee Nation proper and President Reagan's ambassador to Turkey and Cyprus. Following Cox's death in 1994, Mayor Wickersham again campaigned for naming the city after him before he left office in 2001 due to term limits set by then-Gov Sonny Perdue. After years of discussion and no consensus among City Councilmembers about what should be done with Cox's nameplate – which still stands today inside City Hall – Mayor Wickersham announced his plan on November 3rd of that year[1]. Under Wickersham's proposal,[2], all businesses within city limits would have been required to rename themselves under one specific moniker beginning with "Milton" until finally reaching "Cox" upon completion of a poll undertaken by local businesses throughout December 2001[3]. This poll yielded mixed results with some businesses choosing notto participate (e.g., Coca Cola Company) while others (e.g., First National Bank) decided against changing their names altogether due largely to expense or concerns about possible negative publicity associated with such changes.[4] Ultimately however, only two business organizations (McDonalds restaurant chain and Home Depot) changed their names; both chose "Dalton" instead of either Milton or Cox.[5] Despite initial resistance from some locals[6], following Mayor Wickersham's proposal overall support for renaming Atlanta began growing rapidly throughout Fulton County culminating in2003 when voters passed an ordinance adopting commissioners' recommendation that all cities within Fulton County adopt similar plans barring any individual from preventing such change.[7][8][9] As part of this effort mayor wickerham established Operation Namesake which encourages citizens across Atlanta area pledge allegiance each month through graffiti art murals located throughout various neighborhoods including Downtown Atlanta; Midtown; Southside; East Village; West Village; Park Slope/Clinton Hill/Marietta Hills etc...
