In 1838, Dalton joined the Confederacy and began manufacturing artillery and ammunition for Confederate forces. After the war, Dalton fell into decay but slowly regained its former prosperity thanks to new industries such as oil production and agriculture. Today, Dalton is one of the most vibrant towns in Georgia with a thriving arts community and rich cultural heritage.

However, during World War II the mills closed and many residents left for various reasons such as food shortages or military service. Today only a few remaining buildings from those times remain including The Five Points Hotel whichdates back to 1831 and is now part of the Historical Museum of Dalton
