In 1830, when Georgia became a United States state, Fort Walton became part of Atlanta and continued to be called Fort Walton until 17 June 1885 when it reverted back to its original name - Fort Walton Beach (later renamed Jacksonville). The first school in Dalton was established in 1827 by Reverend David Moody which met at an old mill on Broad Street near where Interstate 85 meets UGA Boulevard today. In 1830, there were only 8 pupils attending school; however, during Reconstruction period (1868-1877), enrollment grew rapidly due to open enrollment laws passed by Congress which granted voting rights to freedmen and other minorities throughout America's South following the American Civil War. In 1870–71 alone, enrollment increased from 2 students to 36 students; however this growth stopped abruptly because no money could be found for new buildings/teachers/boards/etc., leading to many residents moving away during this time period because they could not afford to leave their homes temporarily while awaiting new opportunities orresented by their government officials1 It wasn't until 1909 that Mrs A Hedy Epstein donated land on what is now US-501 N US-Highway 321 east of downtown Dalton for use as a public high school ("Epstein High School"). This donation made possible building of current stadium complex including gymnasium/ auditorium/football field which opened in 1960 and has been home to various sports programs (football coach Kirby Smart Stadium being completed just last year) ever since2 .
