The 1860 Census found that there were only 10 gun shops in Dallas, Texas. This number decreased significantly after the Texas Revolution occurred in 1845. Gunsmiths started producing handguns instead of rifles and pistols. It is believed that these new handguns were more accurate than earlier firearms due to their lack of Marlins design flaws. In 1875, an American company known as Mason Firearms produced a revolver called the Colt Single Action Army Model 11 (SA-11). This firearm was very successful and soon became popular among law enforcement officials and other professionals. The SA-11 was eventually replaced by the Smith & Wesson Model 3 revolver in 1903. During World War II, Dallas became a major center for arms production due to its location on telegraph lines connecting various war-ring nations. This led to increased demand for firearms and pistol parts from both allies and Axis countries alike. Dallas was founded by a group of Scotsmen in 1836. The city's name comes from the Dallas Ranch, which was the first land grant given to Scotsmen in Georgia. The original settlers were farmers and cattle ranchers who arrived in search of new grazing lands. By 1850, many of these pioneers had moved on to other parts of Georgia, but some decided to stay and start a town near the mouth of the Don River. They named their town Dallas after General David Easley (1811-1881), who led an expedition against Seminole Indians in 1835. The site where Dallas now stands was chosen because it had excellent shipping access andirlwind potential for cotton production. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell chose to attack Union forces at Vicksburg instead of retreating south like his comrades did. A battle ensued that left over 100 dead and thousands more wounded; as a result, Dallas became one of Atlanta's most important transportation hubs. After the war ended, Dallas grew quickly due to its importance as a manufacturing center for munitions and paper products used by both sides in the conflict. In addition, post-war Reconstruction saw growth in industry including banking, real estate development, and agriculture until World War II when defense spending caused industrial decline across much of America In 1951,Dallas voted into existence its own city charter which made it one of only two cities without county jurisdiction within Fulton County (the other being Savannah). This separation allowed for faster growth thanks to annexation by surrounding counties during subsequent years until 1961 when all Gwinnett County municipalities were merged into Atlanta proper under mayoral decree known as Metro Management Plan No 1 or MMP1 In 1995 DART bus rapid transit system opened between downtown & Midtown with stops at Northside Mall & Westside Center DART light rail will open between downtown & Midtown this fall
