In 1886, Dallas began its growth as an agricultural center when J.C. Penney opened one of the first department stores west of the Mississippi River in downtownDallas. In 1865, the Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. In Dallas, Georgia, the surrender was reported by newspapers and later authenticated by official records. The city was named after General Lee and was founded on a bluff overlooking the Chattahoochee River. It became an important junction for trains travelling between Chattanooga, Tennessee and Atlanta, Georgia.
