Cusseta is a small town in southeastern Georgia, United States. It was founded by Cusseta people in 1868 as a stop on the railroad between Athens and Selma. The first post office was opened in 1870. The population of Cusseta peaked at 521 in 1930, but decreased to just 91 in 1940 due to the Depression. After World War II, the population began to grow again as more people moved into the area. The economy has been fluctuating since the early 2000s, with fluctuations ranging from modest growth to declines in both employment and income. In 2016, Cusseta voted 93% against a proposed constitutional amendment that would have restored voting rights to convicted felons without chance of parole for 25 years. Cusseta is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, about 20 miles east of Athens and 100 miles north of Selma. According to one report, during its peak population size it consisted of three churches and six schools; today there are only two churches and one school left standing. As late as 1910, only about 10 percent of Cusseta's population could read or write; today less than 1 percent can do so. The first settler in what is now Cuseta was James Auld who arrived with his family in 1868 from Scotland overland via Texas Longhorn Trail wagon journeyurs on horseback after traveling through Alabama and Georgia looking for a better place to live than what he saw around him on his journey westward along the trail: "A few brave men had made this great effort also but they all died within a few years." James' children helped their father find land where they built homes between 1869-1872: "They [James'] home became known as 'The Ridge'. After eight years they sold it back to their brother Robert who had come down from Tennessee." Thereafter until 1840 no new settlers were allowed within five miles (8 km) of any creek or stream because Creek Towne Wasbrough reserved these lands for himself alone "…owing thereby not only exclusive possession but an exemption from military service." From 1840-1865 Creek Towne increased water access restrictions so much that some farmers turned off their wells entirely for fear Creek Towne would drain them dry if he ever got his hands on too much water! By 1865 Creek Towne had become such an powerful man that state legislators called upon Governor Andrew Johnson “to take measures” against him because “he appears evidently disposed…to monopolize entire portions”of eastern Georgia…the situation seemed desperate enough before matters came unto a head when Mr…..Creek townsite owner went into partnership with local farmer……and began appropriating vast amounts In response legislation was passed authorizing African Americansresident inside white limits without special permits (known as Reconstruction Acts) which applied equally whether black or white residents resided outside those limits provided certain conditions were met such as getting proper identification papers and paying taxes like white citizens did During this time period literacy rates among blacks ranged anywhere from 50% – 80%. However during EDGE (Equal Employment Opportunity Act) programs starting after WWII education levels slowly improved overall however among black inmates illiteracy rates remain high especially compared to other groups
