The town was founded in 1852 by settlers from Muskogee and Mingo counties in Oklahoma Territory. It was named for General John A. Cusseta, an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. In 1872, when Georgia became a state, Cusseta had a population of just four people. But over time it grew rapidly as farmers moved into the area and new businesses were established including a grocery store and post office. In 1925, the first high school opened in Cusseta with 10 students; today there are six schools serving grades K-12 with more than 50 students enrolled each semester. The economy of Cusseta has been based on agriculture since its founding; however, with advances in technology and other industries such as medical equipment sales have become increasingly important to the community's economy as well. Recently there has been development of several businesses within walking distance of downtown including cafes/restaurants and a library/museum complex which open to the public every day during operation hours (9am-5pm). One notable recent development is that Interstate 285 has been expanded to include a bypass around town which should improve traffic flow while also providing more opportunities for economic growth within the community

Cusseta is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,885 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and is located about 12 miles east of downtown Atlanta on Interstate 285. The community was first settled in 1837 by Scots-Irish immigrants from Ulster who had come to Georgia as agriculturalists looking for land to grow crops and raise livestock. By 1865, when Cusseta became a local post office under the name of Newtown,[1] it had a population of just over 100 people. In 1887, three brothers founded the Cusseta Coal and Coke Company with help from their father-in-law, James Mays Sr., an entrepreneur in cotton production near Athens. The company built a mill and started producing coal for local power plants. In 1928, the company sold its assets to Peabody Coal Corporation for $5 million. During World War II, Cusseta served as one of several military airfields used by the United StatesAAF (USAAF) during World War II.[2] In 1945, following Japan's surrender, Allied forces burned all but two months' worth of fuel supplies stored at Cusseta Airfield before evacuating all remaining inmates; most were POWs from Southeast Asia who were never released.[3][4][5] Afterward Cusseta became one of many towns in southern Georgia that experienced economic hardship due to wartime efforts; however,[6] it regained its former prosperity after veterans moved into the area beginning in the early 1970s. The town has also played host to several annual events including country music festivals and car Shows open to the public which have helped revive its economy[7].
