The early settlers of Cusseta were General James Robertson and his family who arrived in 1825. They cleared land and built a log cabin on what is now State Route 389 near present day Cusseta Creek. In 1830, they founded what became known as Robertson's Station, a trading post and cattle station located on the Chattahoochee River. In 1832, pioneer John Wesley Dobbs settled in what is today Cusseta and named it after his mother's birthplace - Kessletown, England. He also established a blacksmith shop in the village which still stands to this day. In 1835, Captain John Silliman erected an asylum for refugees from slavery in what is now downtown Cusseta. The first African American resident of Cusseta was Elijah Woodruff who arrived in 1840 from Savannah, Georgia with his family under the sponsorship of Colonel Robert Eads Sr..
