Cusseta is a small town in the U.S. state of Georgia, located on the Savannah River. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,811. The name comes from a Cherokee word meaning "cornfield." The first settler in Cusseta was George Burcham and his family in 1810. In 1816, John Fenton and his family arrived and soon afterward had two children, also named George: one born in 1817 and one born in 1819. By 1830 there were six families living here! In 1784, General James Wilkinson founded Augusta on the Savannah River opposite Cusseta. General Wilkinson's store became one of the most important businesses in this area until it burned down in 1861. From then until 1861, Cusseta was under Confederate rule as part of Augusta County. During Reconstruction Period (1871-1877), many African Americans moved to Cusseta because they could not find work elsewhere during that time period due to Jim Crow Laws which discriminated against them by race. Some examples are: Booker T Washington who started Tuskegee Institute; Eugene McDowell who started Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity; Reva Manuela White who became first female doctorate holder at Emory University; Drancy Cooks who became first African American pastor at First Baptist Church of Cusseta; Willard McClernand and his brother Woodruff McClernand also came to live here during this time period but ultimately left because they could not get a job outside their local community after being accused of white treason by their Confederate masters

Cusseta is a small town in north Georgia, United States. The population was 1,083 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cobb County municipality. The town was founded by white settlers in 1810 and named for Captain James Cusseta, an American Revolutionary War hero who fought against British forces in North America. In 1813, Cusseta's father, John Cusseta, donated land to the town so that it could be built on. The first building erected in Cusseta was a log cabin used as a store and post office. In 1830, the name of the town was changed to Navasota after Spain's Navarrese colony of that name arrived in Georgia with steamboats from Havana Bay. In 1835, Navasota replaced Cusseta as the official name of the town when Navarrese residents decided to become Georgians rather than Spanish colonists. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded northern Georgia and attempted to march on Atlanta; however his army was met by Union General Sherman at Franklin Park near Chattanooga and Ewell retreated back into southern Alabama without accomplishing his goal. A year later (1862), during Reconstruction following the Civil War, Mayor Jenson placed restrictions on voting rights for black Americans living in Cusseta because he felt their presence would create a "Negroes party" which wouldiculty functioning effectively within society as a whole. This policy ultimately led to violence between blacks and whites throughout much of central Cobb County during this time period- one such incident took place when A&P convenience store proprietor Harry Belcher shoot dead four black customers after they refused to give up their lunch pails for free due to Belcher's objections to what he saw as racial discrimination against African Americans living within his establishment). After years of peaceful protest by local black citizens until finally achieving passage of legislation allowing voting rights for black citizens on November 15th 1865 (just two weeks before presidential election day),Navasota had finally attained its full democratic identity as an incorporated community under state law although some continued protests were staged until 1969 when all but three buildings remain standing today including its only grocery store which still operates weekly despite being condemned by both city officials and inspectors from Building & Construction Safety Administration (BCSA) over concerns about fire hazards). Today there are few businesses left remaining inside original townsite boundaries - most have moved away or been abandoned - leaving almost nothing remaining aside from large patches of desert grasses where once homes stood while small communities flourished just beyond them suburbs now sit hosting bedroom communities composed largely Of people who can remember individual streets names but not contributing anything else about what happened here prior...Cresseta is an interesting case study in itself considering nearly every other community south of Interstate 85 has since gone away along with virtually all rural housing stock save those located within a few miles radius of modern day navassota...the dwindling importance and value currently bestowed upon any remnant physical evidence surrounding these communities provides further insight into how history often repeats itself...
