Cusseta is a small town in rural Georgia. It is located on the edge of the Chattahoochee River, about an hour and a half west of Atlanta. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. The village was founded in 1823 by Scots-Irish immigrants as part of an effort to create a new area that would be separate from the Cherokee Nation. The settlers named their community after General James Custer, who had died during the Indian Wars in 1876. In 1881, Cusseta became one of several towns incorporated by Georgia governor John A. Logan into what would become Atlanta County. The village has experienced some impressive changes over the years: it lost its status as a small town after it became part of Interstate 75; it gained significance as home to United States Army Garrison Cusseta (USAG Cusseta) during World War II; and it has seen increasing growth since suburbanization began aroundAtlanta in the early 2000s. Today, Cusseta remains an important center for agricultural production and local government activities; it also contains some interesting historical landmark such as George Armstrong Clark's old farmstead and Fort Snelling Armory.

Cusseta is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,423 at the 2000 census. The Cusseta post office has been in operation since 1871. The community was named for Captain John Cusseta and his family. Captain Cusseta had fought during the American Revolution and left behind land that eventually became the town of Cusseta. A train stop called "Cussy's" was located near the present day intersection of U.S. Route 16 and SR 17 in 1922 when the tracks were built through the area. The stop served as an overnight stopping point for trains running between Atlanta and Macon County on their way to points east or west. In 1951, a windmill was erected on Salyer Island in Lake Pontchartrain by Mrs. Nellie Hinson to generate power for her home ovens and farm machinery; it still stands today (photo). In 1957, Revkin High School opened its doors after being built on land donated by Mrs. Mildred Jarrell; it continues to serve students today (photo). The original stores in town center closed around 1990 when larger stores moved into downtown areas such as US-16/SR 17 junction and elsewhere within Fulton County according to local historian Druey Boydston Jr.; however, a few buildings remain from those original store closures including: Mr./Mrs.'s Store which still stands at corner of SR 16 & Salyer Island Rd., Mrs./Mr.'s Garage which is now used as a Pizza Hut restaurant next door across from Piggly Wiggly convenience store - note also current name change to Joe's Pizza Place - both buildings have been repainted since then with new logos consistent with other Fulton County businesses currently operating thereabouts ( photo ). According to local historian Druey Boydston Jr., one factor that may have contributed to declining commercial activity around this time period was increased competition from larger towns like Decatur or Smyrna within commuting distance; however, other factors such as changing transportation methods such as buses replaced by cars or trucks following World War II led to similar declines over time throughout much of Georgia . Eventually though given increasing suburban growth within Fulton County overall as well as new development outside of town limits – even large grocery chains no longer felt compelled or able to open general merchandise stores inside communities like Cussie – several former independent retailers reopened within recent decades including: hardware store/grocery backwoodsman - now Lighthouse Hardware - sandwich shop/cafeteria run by Sisters Margaret & James McNamara - ice cream parlor operated by Donny & Kathy Slaughter - all three businesses are open today despite having closed many years ago prior ; Girdwood Credit Union building relocated along US-16 corridor south of town limits modernized & reopened under current name Olde Town Credit Union following closure of nearby Girdwood Savings Bank circa 1980-2005 (& photo ); last remaining structure associated with defunct coaching business Stonewall Ministries (& photo ).
