Cusseta is a small town in Georgia located on the Chattahoochee River. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus, Georgia Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name Cusseta comes from the Creek word "kusha" meaning "hill". The settlement was first established in 1836 by Welsh settlers under the leadership of Captain John Chilton and his wife Catherine Chilton. In 1840, Captain James Aiken organized a group of men to explore new lands in western Georgiana and they reached Cusseta on October 20, 1840. They named it after their patron saint, Saint Columba, who had died that year. When General Andrew Jackson was elected president in 1844, he selected Cusseta as one of his campaign sites forgainst Native American warriors known as the Creek Nation. After Jackson's election victory over Jefferson Davis in November 1848, local citizens petitioned Congress to recognize their community as an incorporated city under Georgian law. On January 1, 1850, Cusseta became a city with an estimated population of 2200 people. From its beginnings as a simple agricultural community until it became a major center for cotton production during Reconstruction era times – when African Americans made up about 60% of its population – Cusseta experienced some significant changes and growth - both good and bad - throughout its lifespan. In 1865-1867 several destructive floods destroyed much of downtown Cusseta including most all buildings within two blocks north of what is now First Street; however this did not seriously damage any other structures within 15 miles radius excepting one small log cabin which still stands today near Third Street intersection (now Whitehead Road). Despite this devastation many residents rebuilt quickly using salvaged materials and lumber from demolished buildings or took advantage of government assistance through various loans and grants available to them at that time including $4000 given by President Ulysses S Grant towards reconstruction efforts following the Civil War During these years also several churches were built such as Our Lady Of Loretto which later became St Alban's Episcopal Church (1868), Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1869), Polish National Monument Chapel (1872) and finally Holy Cross Roman Catholic church (1902). All these churches remain extant today providing worship services to present day residents while also preserving important historical evidence about early Baptist/Catholic history in this area
