Cusseta is a small community in Georgia that has been inhabited by the Cushman family for over two hundred years. The Cushmans are one of the most influential and respected families in the area, and their history is intertwined with that of Georgia itself. The first occupants of what is now Cusseta were Native Americans who came to the area during the early 1600s. After some time, European settlers arrived, and by 1715, they had established a small town called Muskogee on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. Cusseta was originally named after Captain James Cook’s ship, HMS Resolution, which visited the area in 1795. After Resolution departed from Georgia, local residents began to call themselves “Cussetians” or “ flowerers” because of their proximity to the river. In 1802, a group of white men from Muskogee moved to Cusseta and began to cultivate land. They named their farm “Moses Cottonwood” after one of their own members. While there were occasional visits by missionaries throughout the 1800s, it wasn’t until 1826 that Christianity actually started to take hold in Cusseta. A Welsh missionary named John Davies set up an outpost here in 1827 before moving on to other parts of Georgia later that year. However, Davies left behind a legacy which continues today – he is credited with helping start cotton production in Georgia! In 1840-1841, another Welsh missionary named David Lloyd set up an outpost here as well before moving on permanently two years later. By this point though, Christian influence had become more dominant than any other form of religion in Cusseta – although some people still practiced traditional Indian beliefs until around 1911]. In 1850-1851 however*, African American slaves began working at Moses Cottonwood Farm; this was soon followed by others through gradual emancipation throughout all aspects of Georgian society beginning in 1865*. At this point though*, many Georgians still considered slavery an institution which needed To be ended*!* Although progress had been made since then*, much work remained ahead including ensuring equal rights for all citizens*!* Despite these positive strides however*, many people continued to struggle against racism and prejudice until after World War II**). *During World War II***), many Georgians voluntarily served in camps located around America due to restrictions placed upon them by government officials***). **After World War II***), many Georgians resumed their old ways and continued using slavery as a wayto survive***). ***Many Georgians continue living within poverty lines today due to discrimination faced from certain segments within our society*)
