He named them Creeks because their appearance suggested they would not be hostile to white people if allowed to live among them as their original ancestors had done. In 1784, General George Rogers Clark's army marched through Cherokee country looking for an Indian trail that could lead them eastward into Georgia. On July 5th, when they reached the Chattahoochee River, Clark ordered his scout Major John Atwater to cross over and see if anyone was living along the riverbank near where today's Cusseta stands. Atwater found three small houses with no one home inside and reported back to Clark without taking any pictures or making any notes about what he saw. It wasn't until 1802 that James Moore discovered what became known as "Cueva de los Muertos" or "Dead Cave". The cave still remains un explored today but according to legend its bottom contains priceless artifacts dating back 4500 years including pottery from Mexico City’s Pre-Columbian period which scholars believe could be worth up to $100 million dollars! A post office called "Cueva de las Cuevas" was established in 1807 by Captain David Dickson with mail carried out from Milledgeville on horseback every other day arriving at 9 PM local time which made it possible for farmers in nearby towns like Cumming and Decatur to get mail delivered right to their door! It wasn't until 1865 when Bay State Railroad reached Cusseta via a short tunnel under the Chattahoochee River that residents began getting regular mail service! For many years it was said that one of the reasons why Bay State Railroad didn't build more tracks closer to town was because they refused to allow passengers onto their trains without first having their photograph taken!

On December 5th antecedent settlers petitioned for incorporation as a village under the name of "Newbern" but this petition was not accepted until January 8th1814 when Colonel Isaac Hurd became its first mayor In 1830 Major John Fitch built a sawmill and gristmill here which remain today as one of Georgia's most popular tourist attractions In 1850 Cusseta had a population of just five people when it incorporated as an unincorporated community On May 28th 1870 during Reconstruction all white people were ordered out of towns that had not ratified Reconstruction ordinances During World War II Japanese American residents were interned here after being taken into custody during the early stages of World War II
