Covington is a small city in the Atlanta metropolitan area, located on the north side of the Georgia state line. The population was 26,844 at the 2010 census. Covington's history begins with Creek Indians who first settled there in 1785. In 1811, General Andrew Jackson led an attack against these Indians and burned their village tothe ground. The town began to grow rapidly after this event and by 1832 it had attained its present size. The city was named for John Covington, an Englishman who came to America in 1786 and purchased land near what is now downtown Covington from Cherokee chiefs. He built a home here and called his community "Coventry." After Jackson's death in1845, general Robert Ewell decided to move the capital of Georgia from Savannah to Covington so that he could better supervise the colony's agricultural production. In 1868-69, Confederate troops under General Nathan Bedford Forrest took over much of south Atlanta during the Battle of Chattahoochee River Bridge which resulted in more than 900 deaths among Union forces and many homes being destroyed or damaged. This event is commonly known as "The Battles of Atlanta". Following World War II, when southernAtlanta became part of newly independent United Statesof America, Coventry continued to grow steadily until its peak population levels around 1970 when it lost about one-third of its residents due to various factors including suburbanization; however, Coventry still remains one of Greater Atlanta's most vibrant communities today with a diverse range of cultures represented among its residents (including African American majority neighborhoods)
