Covington is a city in metro Atlanta, Georgia, United States. It was founded in 1871 by sir John Covington and has been the county seat of Fulton County since 1872. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. Covington is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The site on which Covington was founded has been called "The Promised Land" because it had been promised to America by General Andrew Jackson as part of his Creek Nation treaty of 1830. Covington's early growth came from its location close to major transportation hubs, including ferries across the Chattahoochee River and railroads that connected it with other parts of Georgia and South Alabama. In 1840, cottonseed mills began operation in what is now downtown Covington and soon became one of the largest industrial areas in Atlanta. Cotton production continued to be an important factor in Covington's economy through the late 1800s and into the early 1900s; however, during this time cotton farming eventually became less prevalent and jobs moved away from town to larger cities such asAtlanta or Jacksonville due to innovations in world trade which made goods cheaper overseas. In response to this change, many people moved into downtown Covington during this time period (specifically around East Broad Street) in order to continue their businesses within walking distance of everything they needed- something that continues today as one of downtown's most popular attractions (particularly for retail). During World War II much economic activity occurred within downtown Covington due to war-related contracts being awarded there; however, after V-E Day much business stopped until recently due mainlyto lack of access to land outside DowntownCovINGTON - again a resultof technological advances! Today redevelopment is happening throughout DowntownCovINGTON with new restaurants/bars/stores opening up all along Broad Street just south of Ponce de Leon Park while old buildings are being used as office space or apartments - giving longtime residents some peace of mind that their community will not disappear overnight!

The Covington, Georgia community was founded in 1810 by Captain John Fennimore. The first settler in the area was James Millington. In 1822, Captain John Gwin organized a wagon train for goods to be transported from Savannah to the new town of Covington. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 had a population of about 100 people. By 1840, the population had increased to over 500 people and Covington became an important commercial center in the region. In 1851, General Nathan Bedford Forrest arrived in Georgia and began his march on Atlanta. On November 20,1851, General Forrest's forces reached Covington and burned it to the ground. The ashes of Covington remain today as a reminder of what could have been if Atlanta had not been destroyed.
Covington was founded by white settlers in 1814. The town was named for General James Covington, who led a military expedition against the Cherokee in that year. The first post office was established in Covington in 1816. In 1819, the town became a consolidated city.
