The range was used to teach children how to shoot and hunt. In 1952, the county commissioners decided to buy an additional parcel of land for use as a Shooting Range. This property was located on Elm Street between Druid Hills Road and Main Street. With this new property, the County Commissioners also decided to build a building to house the Shooting Range. This building was called “The Gables” and it is currently located on Elm Street between Druid Hills Road and Main Street. Since then, Covington has had several other Shooting Range buildings built before finally getting its own Shooting Range Building that we know today as The Gables!

The first post office was established in Covington on July 1, 1847. The name of the town changed to Covington on October 2, 1881, due to its merger with Milledgeville. The Community College of Georgia provides education for students within the community as well as outside of it. The hospital offers emergency services including surgery and maternity care out of its facilities on Fairhaven Avenue near downtown Covington. Due to its size and location within the Atlanta metropolitan area, Covington has become an important cultural center for people throughout Fulton County and much of Georgia. Covington, Georgia is a small town located in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 9,893 at the 2010 census. Covington has been called the " Gateway to the South" for many years because of its location on the route between Atlanta and Savannah. The first residents of what is now Covington were Native Americans who lived near present-day Decatur and Milledgeville. In 1785, Colonel James Robertson founded a small settlement here after becoming interested in draining marshland in central Cobb County. The name was changed to Covington in 1825 when Colonel John Wilkinson added the word "coveting" to make it more pronounced as an English word. In 1833, General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his army from Chattanooga into central Georgia and began sweeps through Cobb County looking for settlers willing to join him in his Confederate cause. When he found none willing to fight for him, Forrest burned most of Covington and other villages during his march southward. For three days he burned without stop, leaving behind only ashes and pieces of furniture. The town's rebuilding began immediately after Forrest's departure and continued until about 1915 when it really started to take off due largely to local cotton farming interests which had been expands greatly with irrigation techniques developed by American engineers during World War I (1914-18). Cotton farming became very important in giving area stability post-WWII; however much of that prosperity came from outside investments such as shopping malls, professional sports teams (MLB Atlanta Braves & NFL Falcons), film production (such as "The Help"), truck manufacturing plants etc….. Today much of downtown business activity takes place out on Decatur Road including several good restaurants including BB&T Bank - one of the few banks still open after Katrina made landfall several weeks ago…. A new library opened in September 2014 within walking distance of all shopping areas adjacent or bordering downtown…. Most businesses have closed since then but some may reopen if rains stay away
Covington was founded in 1802 by Captain James Covington and his wife, Polly. The first permanent settler in the area was Andrew Jacks, who arrived in 1792. In 1802, Covington was platted and named for Captain James Covington. It became a town in 1851 when it was included within the newly formed Ivey County. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Covington served as a garrison for Confederate General Hood's forces on the Chattahoochee River. After the war ended, Covington reverted to its original name of "Covington." In 1870, a post office called Covington was established at what is now downtown. The post office remained open until 1907. In 1903, an electrical substation and telephone line were constructed through town. The line became operational in 1909. In 1916,during World War I, CovingTON developed a significant munitions industry with artillery ammunition and machine guns being produced there for use by both American and British troops
