The expansion of the Covington community took place from the early 1800s until after World War II. One of the earliest groups to settle in Covington was Methodists. In 1826, John Hemphill founded a mission station in what is now known as Cumberland County. The Methodists began construction on a church and school in what is now downtown Covington. They also engaged in other religious activities such as preaching, teaching, and social services. The Baptists arrived in Georgia during the 1830s. William Jernigan built a log cabin near present-day town of Decatur on August 15, 1833, while serving as an army base commander at Fort Pulaski. He and his family soon moved to Covington and started worshiping at Isaac Watts' childhood home on North Main Street (now Broadwalk Avenue). In 1838, Baptist missionary James Hargrave established a mission Station at Waycross on protected land east of Savannah River. By 1840, about fifty Baptist families had settled in Covington. In 1848–49, white settlers bought property around what is now downtown from African Americans who had been forced into slavery during the antebellum period. The first black settler in Covington was Major Elijah Hillier who purchased property northwest of city limits from Captain Nathaniel Hawkins Jr.. On October 10, 1850, he laid out streetscape for what would become downtown Covington with assistance from Methodist minister dentist Drury Goodwyn Jr.. Covington, Georgia is a small town in north Georgia. The population was 9,551 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta-Fulton metropolitan area. The name comes from Colonel John Covington who fought in the American Revolution and helped win independence for Georgia. Many of the historic buildings still remain in use today, including the old courthouse and jail. The town began to form around 1820 when Peter Covington started trading with Cherokee Indians on the Chattahoochee River. He built a cabin here and named it Fort Covington after his father's home in Kentucky. In 1827, John Richardson bought land here and started farming. He named his farm Grantville because he received a grant from President James Kenedy to purchase it. In 1840, General Andrew Jackson moved his army into northeast Georgia to attack Mexico during the Mexican–American War. General Jackson's forces encountered resistance near Grantville so he ordered Lieutenant Colonel John PemberTON to burn down all of Grantville as an example to any future insurrections by locals against US authorities. The town was saved by its citizens who rebuilt it quickly using local materials and labor. In 1851, Covington was incorporated as a village by order of Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest Jr.. A year later, it became one of five towns located within what would become Atlanta proper along with Marietta (1860), Dunwoody (1866), Gainesville (1868), and West Point (1870). In 1893, Covington lost its incorporation status but continued to serve as a Village until 1919 when all villages were abolished except forAtlanta proper which retained its own charter until 1959 In 1948, Vernon Hale purchased 1/4 mile east of downtown from Mrs Coca Cola Bottling Company which included some old water tower equipment used for storage before that company relocated out of town . At that time about 3% or less of present day city limits consisted primarily residences while most built up since then mostly Interstate highways surrounding suburbs
