Covington is a town in LaGrange County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Covington were Enoch and Mahala Lewis. They came to the area in 1825 from what is now Alabama. The Lewis family founded a small log cabin on the edge of present day Covington Creek. In 1828, they also erected a large frame house on what is now Court Avenue. They named their home "Fruitvale." The early residents of Covington made a variety of contributions to the community including founding the first school and providing financial support for churches and other civic organizations. One such individual was Ebenezer Cobb who donated land to be developed into a town square which still exists today as part of downtown Covington. He also donated five horses to help with transportation purposes in addition to some tools and equipment needed for developing the town square estate . In 1830, John Wesley Hardin built his home on what is now Court Avenue and became one of local leaders in cotton farming . He died there in 1865 after many years of productive agriculture.. The Hardin Mansion still stands today and can be found across from Village Park near Interstate 85 South . During Reconstruction, many African Americans moved into Covington seeking opportunity during an era when African Americans were not generally welcome within white society
