Covington is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 25,848 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. The first permanent settler in Covington was John Troup who arrived in 1802. He built a cabin on the Chattahoochee River and named it "Covington." In 1804, James Wilkinson purchased land from Troup and founded Wilkinson's Mills. In 1821, Nicholas Appling purchased land from Wilkinson and renamed it Covington after himself. In 1865, Isaac Brown bought 1/4 of section 8 of Baldwin Township from Alexander Hildebrandt for $100 US dollars. Brown set up a gristmill there and named it "Brown's Mill". In 1868, he sold the mill to George Stephenson for $1,000 US dollars. Stephenson enlarged the mill into a flour-mill with two floors and four driveways which became known as "The Star of Covington". The mill continued to be operated by Stephenson until 1905 when it was acquired by Wm Bowers & Sons who changed its name to "Bowers' Mill". In 1915, Wm Bowers died and his son William took over as owner; however VFW Post #362 (now Veterans Memorial Museum) still operates the mill as an historical attraction today. In 1932–1933, Lillian Hellman produced her critically acclaimed play "A Streetcar Named Desire" atkinson streetcars ran between what is now Polk Street in downtown Atlanta and Hermitage Avenue in Hermitage Park across from Ebenezer Baptist Church where she lived with her husband Hank Preminger while production took place; Hellman used Cobb trains running through downtown Atlanta to travel between venues throughout the city during production.Hellman also operated what is now called ATL Transport which provided transportation for many famous people including Presidents Franklin D Roosevelt and Harry S Truman among others during their days in office

Covington is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The community was named after John Covington, an American Revolutionary War general and member of the Continental Congress. The first settlers in Covington were Baptist missionaries from Charleston, South Carolina. They established a post on the Chattahoochee River in 1784, and soon began to grow cotton plantations there. In 1802, General Robert Ewell led an army northward from Chattanooga to attack General Andrew Jackson's forces at Battle of Horseshoe Bend. When Jackson withdrew his army to safety near Decatur Hill, Ewell pursued him with artillery and infantry into what is now Covington Township.Ewell's forces destroyed most of theJackson army at Second Bridge over the river and occupied Savannah before withdrawing back to Chattanooga that night. In 1821, Colonel James Brougham bought a tract of land east of present-day Covington from Nicholas Higginbotham for $1 per acre (about ). He began building a sawmill and gristmill on this property which he named "Broughamville". By 1830, Brougham had additional mills built including one called "Hancock" which produced flour for local markets as well as export to England. In 1832 Brougham sold all his holdings except Hancock milling company to Edward Prentice & Company for $40,000 ().Prentice renamed his company Prentice Brothers Manufacturing Company in honor of both Edwards father and uncle who had helped finance Prentice's early business ventures). In 1836 Prentice founded another company - Patton Manufacturing Company - which became one of ATLANTIC COAST'S largest textile manufacturing companies (). In 1881–1882 Jno Atherburn purchased 1/2 mile (0 .8 km) northeast corner lotage (now known as McNutt Road) from S R Hawkins for $10 per acre (). His heirs continued developing it into what is now known as Atherburn Place (). Jno Atherburn was born December 10th 1837 in Scotland but grew up in Glasgow Scotland where he worked on family farms until he met Nancy Maud Robertson when she was working as research assistant on her grand parents farm southeast of downtown Glasgow (this would be around 1906). She married him November 3rd 1860 while they were living at 712 Nolensville Rd., also known then as "Atherburn Place". Mrs Robertson would later become Dole Food Corporation co-founder along with her husband’s brother Charles Fenton Dole.) From here they moved their operation southwest to 610 Peachtree St., Atlanta private home until their death together in 1978.)
