Covington is known for its traditional cotton farming economy and culture. The town was founded in 1819 by John Covington and his family. It became an incorporated community in 1881. At that time, it had a population of just over one thousand residents and consisted of only thirteen buildings including the courthouse and jail. However, through hard work and dedication to their community – both within their own village-and throughout Macon County – farmers quickly adapted to new ways of doing things and began developing new businesses such as groceries stores (later redeveloped into larger chains), blacksmithing shops (later developed into large manufacturers), schools (including one elementary school that still stands today), churches (which have continued to be important parts of the local fabric), farms (which continue to be used for crops such as cotton) and more! By 1955, when the last census was taken in Macon County; only five individuals lived within the boundaries of what would become known as “Covetingtonsville”! Today there are over two hundred citizens living within its borders including many who remain active in their community despite having few resources other than landholdings! During this time period, many African Americans were forced out of their homes and into new plantations elsewhere in Georgia or South Carolina. As a result of its history and role within Georgian culture, Covington has been called "the cultural capital of Atlanta."
The Village of Covington, Georgia was an early settlement in the area now known as Covington, Georgia. The first mention of what is now Covington dates back to 1785 when a group of Scots-Irish settlers landed on the coast of present day Georgia and named their new town after the village in Scotland where they had been living for some time. The first farmers in the area were men from Ulster who had come to seek land and opportunity in newly formed America. By 1820, there were five families settled in what is today Covington. In that year, General Nathan Bedford Forrest ordered all African Americans living east of the Mississippi River to be removed by force and sent westward into Indian Territory. This order resulted in many deaths and much destruction among those forced across the river. Many people in Covington decided to stay and resist Forrest's orders, but most eventually succumbed to disease or starvation. A small group of pioneers led by James Robertson built a grocery store and wagon shop near present day Crossroads Boulevard and State Route 301 about 1840. The business thrived until 1851 when a severe drought caused heavy crop damage and made it difficult for local farmers to sell their goods statewide. In 1866, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down part of the village courthouse which destroyed much evidence linking black Americans with slavery
