Covington is a town in the southeastern corner of Georgia. It was founded in 1820 by Captain James Covington and his family, who named it for their ancestral home, Covington House. The population of Covington was 1,094 at the 2010 census. The town was one of many settlements established along the Chattahoochee River during the early 19th century as part of a process known as cession to become part of the United States. In 1821, Captain Covington's brother-in-law, John Talbot, sold him 160 acres (65 ha) near present-day Covington for $5 per acre ($100 total). This land formed what is now called Talbot Avenue. In 1828, General George Washington arrived in Atlanta and took up residence at Talbot House on Blount Street. He and his wife occupied this house until her death in 1830. From here they moved to neighboring Stone Mountain where they lived until their move to Covington in 1832. Captain James Cushington served as Mayor of Atlanta from 1865 to 1870 and1872–75; he also served as Chairman of the Board of Education from 1895 to 1896. Covington, Georgia is a small town located in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. Covington is known for its peach orchards and cotton fields. The first settlers in what is now Covington were African Americans who were brought over by slave traders in the early 1800s. In 1821, James McKnight founded a small farm near present-day Covington. McKnight was able to purchase some land from Colonel John Troup and build a cabin on the farmstead. The first school in what is now Covington was built on this farmstead in 1825 by teacher David Morehead. In 1828, Jno Leflore bought 640 acres of land west of present-day Covington from Captain John Smith. Leflore named his new settlement "Lefloreville." After purchasing the land, Leflore began building a log cabin which he called "The Old Fort." The first school in what is now Lefloreville was also built by Leforcey. A post office was established at "Leforceyville" in 1830, but it didn't remain open long because postal service arrived only two years later than it did at nearby Atlanta! In 1835, Colonel Thomas Sanders bought 1,000 acres of land east of present-day Covington from Jno Leforcey for $1 per acre! When Sanders discovered that there wasn't enough water available to cultivate his new property, he sold it back to Leforcey for $1 per acre! In 1840, Justice Samuel Hinson bought 598 acres of land north of present-day Covington from General Nathan Bedford Forrest for $4 per acre! At this time (1840), most white landowners had stopped farming around here because they found the soil too sandy; furthermore, many black farmers had moved into these areas during this time due to freedom and opportunity given to them by Reconstruction laws. However, when Forrest learned about Hinson's purchase and saw that there would be ample water resources available nearby if he increased production on his property), he decided to try farming here again! In 1843/44 Major General Robert Ewell purchased 2 miles (3 km) of road betweenpresent-day Lithonia and Greenbriertown from Elijah Brougham for $250 per mile! This route becameknown asthe "Ewell Road". After making some repairs to the road himself (!), Ewell sent soldiers out onto the road to clear way for wagon trains bringing goods upriver to Nashville through Fayette County! By 1850 much ofwhat constitutes modern day rural Fulton County had been born as a result of these developments!!
The town of Covington, Georgia was founded in 1795 by Captain James Wilkinson. The name derived from the Creek word "coovi" meaning "to clear land." By 1800, the town had a population of about 250 people. In 1824, Major General Andrew Jackson moved his army into what is now Covington to fight against the Creek Nation. After five days of battle, Jackson's army emerged victorious and destroyed all of the Creek villages within sight. The area now known as Covington became part of the United States after the war.
