The first Europeans to visit this area were French colonists who established a trading post near present day Covington in 1765. Captain John Smith and his crew of the "Providence" explored this location on their way from Savannah to find a passage through the Appalachian Mountains to North America. They named the siteafter Sir William Covington, Knight (1684-1746), an Englishman who had been sent by King George II of Great Britain to explore new world lands in 1692-93 and 1696-97. In 1802, General James Kasky organized what became known as the Corps de Garde du Roi which served as royal bodyguard for Louis XVIII of France during his trip across America on his way back from Mexico City. The Guard was disbanded in 1814 when Napoleon Bonaparte moved into exile incompliance with Treaty of Paris following his invasion of Europe. On September 9, 1801, while stationed at Fort Moultrie on Hilton Head Island during its occupation by Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War, Confederate Major General Jubal Early damaged one of Ulysses S Grant's cannons near present day Covington after discovering it within range of Union artillery batteries positioned around fortifications nearby including Fort McAllister located about three miles due north on Hilton Head Island between Charleston and Savannah Proper; thence he proceeded directly towards that fortification without any regard for military consequences or for human life being endangered thereby endangering both Union forces adjacent thereto and also our own citizens situated therein! This act resulted in wide public condemnation throughout south Central Georgia...It was only after President Abraham Lincoln ordered General Sherman to cross over Ia Driggs River bridgehead into Chattanooga Valley that early morning on April 12th 1865 that we finally got word from headquarters that Colonel Jubal Early had withdrawn before reaching our position! A crowd numbering several thousand assembled around Federal Headquarters where they found General Lee waiting with orders to pursue Early...We learned later that earlymorning portions of Lieutenant Colonel John Surry's battery (the only Confederate battery remaining at Hilton Head) attempted unsuccessfully to take up pursuit but were repulsed by Federal artillery fire! As late as 1951 there still remained some munitions left over from the Civil War stored at Fort Moultrie acrossfrompresent day Covington proper! In 1971 all these facilities were closed down along with many other Confederate relicsthatremainedinGeorgia until recently when they were donatedtotheNationalMemorial MuseumofGeorgiainMilledgeville? Today Covington enjoys growth thanks largely to Comprehensive Plan algae hatchery project authorized by Governor Nathan Deal which will provide much needed employment opportunities within local community while preserving natural resources such as waterfowl and trout fisheries; automobile manufacturing plant now under construction adjacentto high school premises; numerous small businesses have opened up since 2000s including fresh produce store open since 1978 called 'Garden Grows'; African American church started up in 1990s now serving more than 2200 people; generally well off residential neighborhoods are located closeby major shopping malls such as Walmartand Home Depot
