This began an agricultural culture that would persist until after World War II when mechanized farming became available and replaced hand labor as the mainstay of local agriculture in Fulton County. In 1868, General George Armstrong Custer camped about two miles northeast of where he later died during his ill-fated ride across America into Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) while leading his 7th Cavalry Regiment overland from Fort Riley to battle against the Sioux Indians at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument near Wagon Wheel Crossing on July 26, 1876. One year later Confederate Gen’l Robert Ewell Jackson surrendered at Appomattox Court House after battles around Petersburg Peninsula including Battle of Seven Pines which resulted in more than 600 Confederate casualties including Jackson himself killed as result of a frontal shot by Union Sgt James Longstreet while they were marching back to their line following victory at Fair Oaks plantation southeast of Petersburg). During Reconstruction days many white voters turned out for Democrats because they wanted jobs and social justice as opposed to corruption endemic throughout much of south Central Alabama during this time period caused by powerful men like Andrew Johnson who had taken office as president due largely to military campaigns won by Ulysses S Grant presidency with massive military spending financed by tariffs levied against southern cotton growers which had led to severe economic decline within southern Alabama itself concurrent with high rates charged by Northern capitalists for transportation necessary for export production along railroad lines running northward from Mobile Bay all the way up into Tennessee Valley; these are among some examples cited hereof why there was so much political power exercised by some African Americans during this era even though it was not always accepted everywhere within society despite attempts made generally by Booker T Washington et al., black leaders such as Dr Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks et al., etc.) Many businesses operating today in downtown Covington were founded or moved here during this time: Hartsfield-Jackson Aviation Company (HJAC), First Southern Bank (FSB), JBL Financial Incorporated (JBL Financial Group), Coca-Cola Bottlers USA Incorporated (CCUSA), American Canastas Corporation (ACA)and others. Covington, Georgia is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Chattahoochee County, Georgia. The population was 2,711 at the 2000 census. Covington is one of the oldest settlements in Chattahoochee County and has been continuously inhabited since 1837. The first settler in what is now Covington was James Dunlap, who began to clear land in 1785. By 1800, there were 10 settlers living in Covington. In 1837, John Hitt founded Hitts Mill which became one of the most important textile mills in Alabama and throughout Southwestern United States. Around 1840-1850 there were several families that started corn farming around this time; these families are collectively known as "The Dunlaps". By 1860-1870 there were only 15 residents residing in Covington. However, by 1880-1900 there had increased to over 100 occupants living within Covington limits! During the early years of the 20th century many businesses operated out of Covington including: Hitt's Mill (1910), Wagon Wheel Mfg & Manufacturing Co (1920), Joplin Paper Works (1925), Pappy's General Store (1930). These businesses played an important role during Chattahoochee County's economic boom during this time period as both local manufacturing and agricultural production grew rapidly due to new technology improvements such as tractors and refrigeration available for purchase through mail order from larger companies like Sears Roebuck and Sears & Roebuck. Additionally, many students from nearby schools such as Candace School started working at these large businesses after completing high school or university courses. However, by 1970-1980 few if any businesses remained open within the boundaries of present day Covington; instead all but two buildings within its original downtown district lay inactive or had been consumed by fire over the previous several decades. However, on Halloween night in 1980 a group of local teenagers decided to revive some long gone enterprises with a costume party which served as their inaugural event back into full operation! In 1990 however when Interstate 75 was reconstructed following a major reconstruction project it completely removed all commercial traffic from downtown area rendering much of what little commerce still existed within its bounds outside of Specialty Stores being quite difficult to access without departing from I-75 altogether for purposes other than shopping/downtown business ventures; even now not all exterior signage remains extant inside Historic Downtown District walls!!! This significant loss for retailestablishment activity led directly to asset depreciation rates for entire citywide inventory near 40% beginning about 2002!!! Notwithstanding all this negative news however things have slowly begun picking up again with various new business establishments opening up recently including: Airstream Park Restaurant (& Brewery) -opened 2006 adjacent to old cotton gin site -offers modern urban dining experiences complete with views across river

The Covington area was first settled in the early 1800s by Georgia Germans. The area was named for a small village in Bavaria, Germany that had been established as a cattle and sheep market. The Covington community began to form in 1810 when German immigrants from Bavaria arrived in what is now Cobb County. In 1815, the United States government bought land around present day Covington from the Cherokee Nation. In 1816, General Andrew Jackson and his army invaded the Cherokee Nation and destroyed their villages and plantations near the town of Covington. The event helped to spur development within the area and led to increased immigration to Cobb County from Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary, Poland, Russia and other parts of Europe. By 1860, over 60% of Cobb County's population were German speaking residents. By 1920, that figure had reached 90%. Many of today's buildings in downtown Covington were built during this time period including some of Atlanta's earliest brick buildings such as First Presbyterian Church (later known as First Baptist Church) which was completed in 1870 and located on Marietta Avenue between Second Street and Third Street. When World War II started in 1939, many German-Americans decided to flee Nazi Germany because of its policies towards Jews and others deemed undesirable under Adolf Hitler's regime. Some came to America through Ellis Island but most chose to settle in what is now Fulton County rather than move into areas controlled by Axis forces or risk being drafted into service during World War II. After the war ended in 1945, local businesses continued growth with several becoming nationally known brands such as Coca Cola Company (founded by John Pemberton), JBL Acoustic Music (established by Sam Phillips) and Philips 66 (the first television company based out of Atlanta). Today many businesses still operate within downtown Covington with a diversity of cultural experiences represented among its citizens including music video game companies such as Atlus America Inc., Bandai Namco Entertainment USA Inc., Capcom Co., Ltd., Konami Koei America Inc., Sega Enterprises Americas LLC., THQ Entertainments Incorporated
