Covington is a small city located in Macon County, Georgia, United States. The population was 4,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Macon-Gadsden metropolitan area. Covington was founded in 1819 by General James Wilkinson and named for Captain John Covington of the British army who had been killed in action near Savannah, Georgia. The community developed around a Baptist church and school which were originally built on land donated by William Wilkinson. The first post office was established at Covington in 1829, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1853. In 1830, the town began to receive mail from other parts of Georgia via stagecoach. In 1836, a flour mill was built and operated until 1861; however, this mill closed down due to lack of use. A cotton gin followed suit in 1865; however this also failed to produce any profits. In 1870, the new Macon Railroad arrived in town and started operating passenger trains between Athens (then Macon) and Decatur (now Atlanta). This led to increased business for the mill as passengers could now travel directly from Athens to Decatur without having to go through Covington or Macon first. By 1888, Covington had become an important stop on these trains with merchandise reaching Atlanta within three days after being unloaded at the mills there! During World War II much of what is now downtown Covington was taken over by military housing barracks used by the UMAP military intelligence service headquarters during World War II as well as later for occupation storage during Korea/ Vietnam era! Although many structures were destroyed or replaced during that time period only a few remnants remain today including several old Baptist churches still standing although they have been renovated numerous times!
