In 1825, Samuel Post purchased land from David Wallace for $400. In 1830, Jameson and Abraham Hardesty bought land from David Wallace for $2,000 and built a log cabin on the site that they named "Hardesty's Cabin" after themselves and their father-in-law, Jesse Hardesty. In 1836, John Fryer sold his interest in Hardesty's Cabin to Jameson and Abraham for $4,000 which made Covington a post office with its own government. In 1840, nine people came to Covington to purchase land from Elias Boudinot for $50 each which included 640 acres (24 hectares). They named their new community "Boudinotville." The cornerstone of the first courthouse was laid in October 1840 by Johnathon Post Sr., one of the founders of Covington Township. A second courthouse was built in 1861 by JF Post Jr.. The town was named for Captain John Covington, who explored and charted the region during his lifetime. In 1802, Covington became part of Mississippi Territory when that state was created from parts of Alabama and Georgia. The following year, it become a county within Mississippi Territory. In 1835, it was made a city by order of territorial governor James K. Polk. It remained an agricultural center until after World War II when industry took over and population growth led to development around downtown and other areas.
