Covington is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 31,853 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1836 by Maj. Gen. James Wilkinson and others as an agricultural community on the Chattahoochee River, about twelve miles downstream from Fort Payne. The town grew rapidly during the antebellum period, reaching its peak of development in the 1850s when cotton production reached its height on the river. By 1860 Covington had become a cattle market town with over 20,000 people and two dry goods stores. However, cotton production ceased abruptly after 1861 due to Union military activity south of Atlanta and the increasing importance of railroads for shipping goods westward. The remains of downtown Covington are now a small cluster of Victorian homes dating from the 1830s-1850s and a few older brick buildings that serve as office orresidential properties. One surviving building from this period isthe Masonic Temple which was built in 1851-54 by Jno Pemberton and dedicated to Freemasonry's first Grand Master John Quincy Adams Sr.. In 1870 Covington became an independent municipality under the name Ofallon but it reverted to Fulton County jurisdiction in 1893 following Alabama's annexation into the Confederacy. In 1907 Covington incorporated as a city under state law; however it continued to function as one unit with separate police and fire departments until 1933 when they were merged into City Hall Tower department which still exists today). The current mayor is Darrell Steinberg who was elected in November 2017 after being sworninto office on December 1st, 2017

Covington, Georgia is a small town in northern Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,936 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Covington was founded in 1874 by Reuben Covington and his family as a cotton plantation on the Chattahoochee River. In 1906 it became an incorporated municipality with a population of 4,872. The downtown business district includes two blocks of light-industrial buildings dating from the early 1970s hugging one bank of the Chattahoochee River. The original inhabitants of Covington were African Americans who worked on plantations near Byesville until 1865 when they were replaced by white settlers who arrived in large numbers following Reconstruction. most prominent among these early newcomers was Reuben Covington Sr., father of Reuben Covington Jr., who moved to Covington from Muskogee, Oklahoma in 1875 and operated a store and general contractor business before becoming mayor in 1903 and later state senator from 1915 to 1923. After World War II, many white residents transferred to nearby Decatur or Macon counties while black residents continued to be concentrated around the older plantations south of town where they worked until after 1960 when racially restrictive zoning ordinances were enacted in neighboring Cobb County which limited black development there. In 1959 whites again began moving into central Covington as job opportunities opened up for them during economic growth in metro Atlanta; however, race continued to play an important role here with some families maintaining close ties through kinship and social interactions over generations while others increasingly adopted more recent Americanized styles (e.g., using popular music videos instead of traditional music). Some businesses such as Hooters closed their doors due to racial discrimination but have since reopened under new ownership; while other businesses like Baskin Robbins remain closed because they do not serve meals that are prepared using segregated kitchen facilities inside restaurants owned by people other than blacks or Asians; however this has recently changed with several chains now opening all-encompassing " Runtime" dining establishments which allow customers of all races access to same food preparation areas without any segregation whatsoever
