In 1880, cotton ginnery owner George Hickey donated land on which a large cotton mill was built. The mill became one of the most important businesses in Covington with its own railroad line providing transportation to other parts of Georgia and Alabama. The mill closed in 1984 but has been preserved as part of a extensive local history program that includes exhibits at numerous local historic homes and businesses dating back to 1800s
