Covington is a small town in south Georgia, about 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Atlanta. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Covington is one of the oldest towns in south Georgia and has been inhabited by the Creeks and Georgians for more than two centuries. The first European to visit Covington was Commodore John Smith on February 14, 1795. Heading up the Chattahoochee River from Savannah, he landed at what is now Covington Point on January 26 of that year. A plaque located nearby commemorates this event. The town was founded by Captains James Gadsden and John Sevier on December 12, 1807 as a landing place for refugees from within Georgia after the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. At its peak it had a population of around 100 people but declined over time due to economic reasons and natural disasters such as floods and hurricanes. In 1821 it became part of Sumter County when it was divided between Atlanta and Fulton County. In 1865, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Covington with his Confederate forces during an attempt to steal supplies from Union military camps in south Georgia. The attack resulted in more than 50 deaths and many injuries among both sides involved; Forrest was later captured and tried for war crimes which led to his execution at Fort Pillow near Mobile Bayou in 1865). The cotton fields that once thrived around Covington are gone now but there are still vestiges remaining including some Victorian homes built before cotton prices collapsed resulting in their demolition sometime ago according to Wikipedia article: "Before 2000s [Cotton prices collapsed], many old-time homes in or near downtown were unoccupied because they could no longer bring money back into operation due to loss from pests (the infestation caused by cockroaches), wearand tear (due to lack of maintenance), or depreciation from being out of production for so long", however some have since been renovated/upgraded over time like this one: It should be noted that while much of what is left behind may be older architecture/vintage homes experiencing depreciation due primarily to rats/mice etc., there also exists significant evidence that active white-collar crime has taken place within Walking distance of almost every interesting office building currently extant anywhere outside central business districts – see “Coveting Corporate Headquarters” sidebar below under Crime section for example!
