The academy grew rapidly with students from all over Georgia attending until it closed in 1892 due to financial difficulties and lack of enrollment. In 1886–87 Baptist pastor A E Hartsfield led a campaign to rename Covington City Park after Rev. John Fenton who had served as pastor there since 1865 when it was called "Fenton's Park". The park became one of Atlanta's most popular tourist attractions; attendance exceeded 1 million visitors annually by 1910! In 1923 then-Mayor James Meeks dedicated Stonewall Jackson Parkway which runs east-west through downtown Covington parallel with Chickamauga Avenue NW which marks its southern border.] ] Upon Mayor Meeks' death in 1934 his widow established the Mrs James Meeks Memorial Fund which continues educationally assistance programs that have been available to street kids & inner city youth ever since] ] In 1964 Mayor John Lewis dedicated MLK Jr Boulevard which runs north-south through downtown between Court House Square West & Morehouse Avenue East] ] After Ulysses S Grant died President Woodrow Wilson placed his remains at Elmwood Cemetery

Covington, Georgia is a small town located in the eastern part of the state of Georgia. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is named for General George Covington and his family who moved from Kentucky to this area in 1815. The first store in Covington was built by John Stephenson, who also founded Stephensville. In 1821, General Alfred Beall bought land in Covington and erected a log cabin there as his home. He had two children with his wife, Jane Beall, and they raised their families here until he died in 1851. In 1865, when Confederate General Robert E Grant arrived in Atlanta to lead the Union effort against the Confederacy, he made his headquarters at Beall's cabin. There he stayed until April 9th of that year when he departed for Richmond on leave. From then on until November 25th of that year when Confederate General Pembert Butler surrendered at Appomattox Station, General Robert E Grant's headquarters were at nearby Marietta.

Covington was founded in 1824 by Methodist missionaries who came from Georgia. The town grew rapidly and by the 1830s had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1835, Covington became the capital of the new Georgia state. The town continued to grow and by 1840 it had an population of over 5,000. By 1850, Covington had become one of the most populous towns in Georgia. In 1861, when Confederate forces took control of Atlanta, Covington was one of the few towns in southern Georgia not destroyed during the siege and occupation.
