Cordele is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,872 at the 2010 census. Cordele is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town is named after General George C. Cordele, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as a brigadier general in the Confederate Army. The first settler in what is now Cordele was John Soddy, who arrived on a whaling vessel called "Hancock" in 1824. He founded what would become Cordele on November 10, 1830 when he land grant to his nephew Walter Scott from Walton County. After Soddy's death in 1831 (aged 71), his heirs sold their interest to David Wynn for $2,000 cash and seventy acres of land east of present day Guthrie Street and north of Spring Streets (now known as Wynn Park). In 1835 two brothers named Wofford bought three hundred acres of property south of Spring streets from David Wynn for $3 per acre ($40/$ = $140/acre) because they could not afford it on their own account. They laid out this land into thirteen lots which became known as “the reserves” (later renamed “Wofford Square”). In 1840 Wofford Square had a population of only four people: one man working on an old mill at the edge of town and three women spinning flax thereon; no children were born until after 1860 when some corduroys were brought into town to be raised by parents unable to provide them themselves due to economic hardships during that time period around Great Lakes regionals being scarce at that time also! In 1861 Jno Burchill came from Scotland with his family and began farming about one mile east of where current Guthrie Street runs today near future Union High School along with building a store on present day Westcott Avenue Burchill name changed it’s finally shortened form Cordele which we still call home today! After living here for many years he donated all or portions of his farm house and other buildings including labor shops used by local farmers during harvesting season back then still standing across Marshall Road just west off Hwy 7 between Guthrie & Bingham Streets! This gave us our first post office #1 too which opened up shop Dec 1st 1865 under new name Post Office Depot before being moved south across Marshall Rd & Bingham Streets next door to Administration Building soon becoming known as First National Bank! From here mail was sent all over country via riverboat plying the lower Chattahoochee River !! We continue Postal service even though bank moved out 3 doors down!! Sorry about that but history does have its own way sometimes 🙂 When Alfred Ives built his large cotton gin factory adjacent to Post Office Depot on Westcott Ave circa 1915 it caused much friction with neighboring landowners as several small farms within walking distance suddenly lost production capacity resulting in high prices for both raw cotton produced by Ives' company AND finished products available at local stores ! So WWI started….and so did WWII !! Finally we got our groove back thanks to A&P Hardware Store located just past current intersection of Marshall & Bingham Streets
