This structure served as the town's first schoolhouse from 1865 until it burned down in 1886. After that point schooling took place at nearby Grady High School until 1915 when a new high school was built adjacent to First Baptist Church across the street from Old White House. The old school building still stands today and is used as offices for Cobb County government since 1991. During World War II Cordele became an important supply stop for soldiers traveling through central Georgia on their way to fight abroad. In 1942–43 cordelers erected two large barns next to First Baptist Church to store foodstuff destined for troops stationed along I-20 outside Atlanta; these barns remain standing today and are open to the public each day during daylight hours. In 1951–52 plans were filed to build a dam across the Chattahoochee River south of Cordele; however these plans never came to fruition because of opposition from landowners near the river's mouth who argued that this would damage their property values too much ().
