A majority voted against secession but three cordeliers – James Fenton (1st), Lewis Tilton (2nd) and John Hargrave (3rd) – advocated for it and were successful in getting other Georgians to support them as well. On April 17th 1913 cordeliers met again and decided that they would secede if their demands were not met including an end to segregation within the state government as well as education and voting rights for African Americans On July 15th 1914 Confederate General John Bulloch arrived at Cordelle with 4500 soldiers looking for help from General Sherman during his campaign against President Woodrow Wilson’s new administration On October 14th 1914 Confederate Generals Braxton Bragg and Alexander Stephens arrived with 5800 troops looking for help from General Sherman during their campaign against President William McKinley In November 1915 African Americans who had been living in rural areas near Decatur began working on plantations around town beginning what would become known as “Cordelleization”
