Cordele, Georgia is a city located in the U.S. state of Georgia. It has a population of around 54,000 people and was founded on January 1, 1853 by former slaves freed by General Nathan Bedford Forrest. The city is named for Major General James Fayette Cordele, who led the military expedition against the Creek Nation in 1811-12. The first store in Cordele was opened in 1851 by J.W. Hickey and his partner Wm. Hickey Sr.. In 1865, Larkin & Company bought out Hickey's share of the business and continued to run it until it closed its doors in 1932. Cordele, Georgia is a town in Coffee County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Cordele is the county seat of Coffee County. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Cordele was James Guthrie, who arrived in 1802 and named it after his home country of Scotland. The Guthrie family operated a gristmill here until 1906 when they sold it to A. W. Adcock and Company and moved to Valdosta, Georgia where they conducted a cotton mill until their death in 1926. In 1907, John Wesley Hardin donated land for a new school campus which he called "Harding School". TheHardin family also founded the First Methodist Episcopal Church (now Northwest Baptist Church) in Cordele in 1912. In 1916 the US government established an airfield at nearby Glynn Field with then-secretary of war Newton Baker as its first administrator After World War I Cordele's economy shifted from agriculture to manufacturing with shipbuilding becoming an important industry due to corduroy tires being produced near Glynn Field during World War II. After the war many factories closed but some remain such as Japeland Rubber Co., which produced rubber products for cars and trucks from 1947 through 1984; Hartsol Corporation that made lead acid batteries from 1951 through 1984; Southern Electric Power Company that manufactured turbines from 1948 through 1984; Armstrong Pump & Machinery Company (now Armstrong Pump & Machine Works) that built pumps from 1937 until 1978; Pumps Unlimited Incorporated (now known as Doherty Pumping Inc.) which manufactures pumping equipment including pump jacks and centrifugal pumps since 1955 Many small businesses were located around this time including Roper's Hardware Store which did not survive into adulthood; White Flowers Nursery started out selling flowers by hand but soon began shipping plants all over Southeast USA; Hopkins Chevrolet stopped making vehicles but still sells parts online A major tourist attraction during these years was downtown Cordelle with its many historical buildings like the original Harding School building now used as a museum before being renovated in 2006-2007 according to architect David Mittleman who said "It had been suggested before that [the old school] might be preserved because there are unique features about it – most notably its exposed brick walls... But no one wanted to touch it because nobody knew what would happen." Ultimately repairs failed to preserve it so it was razed along with other historic buildings on May 3rd 2007 while much of downtown business District 4 experienced significant damage
