One of the largest manufacturers of munitions in Georgia was located here; it manufactured artillery shells and bombs used by both sides in the war. Afterward, cordele became a manufacturing center for agricultural products such as tomatoes and peas before slowly transitioning into an industrial center over time. Today, Cordelle's economy depends largely on its service sector: businesses within that sector include banks ( five including Jarden Bank), health care providers (Kaiser Permanente/Blue Cross Blue Shield), transport companies (Delta Airlines), insurance companies (AIG/Allstate Insurance Company), call centers (Pioneer Telesystems) and retail stores like Walmart Supercenter which occupy all or part of several buildings downtown. The service sector accounts for about eighty percent of total employment in town; manufacturing makes up only about one percent of jobs statewide but employs nearly fifty percent of residents hereabouts.

The first permanent settler in Cordele was James White who arrived in 1819. The townships were organized into two departments: one for African Americans and one for whites. In 1895, Cordele became an incorporated city when all its townships were combined into one department. In 1951, Coca-Cola began production here and as the town grew it developed a large industrial base including Coca-Cola Bottling Company (later known as Pleasant Valley), Cement Pouring Plant (now known as Fort Payne State Park), Cottonseed Oil Processing Plant (now known as Chattahoochee Fertilizer), and other companies such as Wacoal Rubber Co., JBL Laboratories, Philips Electric light bulb factory, Ayer Drug Store and Drycleaner's Supply Company among others. After World War II industry declined but cordial relations between white residents and black residents continued until the early 1970s when race riots broke out throughout the country after passage of Civil Rights Act Amendments which limited segregation in public places
