Cordele, Georgia is a small town in the state of Georgia. The population was 9,771 at the 2010 census. Cordele is located in Pike County. The community lies on the eastern edge of the Appalachian Mountains and is bordered to the north by Interstate 285 and to the east by I-95. It has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa) with warm but not hot summers and mild to cool winters. The first European settlers in Cordele were white Americans who came from North Carolina in 1819. They cleared land and built houses, but soon realized that they needed water for their crops and homes, so they leased land from Native American families. In 1828, Captain John Smith discovered a well near Cordele Creek where people later began using water for irrigation purposes. By 1830, there were twenty two households in Cordele. In 1840, Reverend James Murchison organized what would become known as "The Methodist Episcopal Church" in Cordele after meeting with Drury Elliott about forming a church there. Reverend Murchison believed that Methodism could spread throughout Georgia because it was based on Christianity's moral code rather than on rules set by bishops or priests like those in Europe. He also wanted to promote agriculture as an important factor in Georgian society because farming had been one of the key sources of income for many Georgians since before independence from Britain). On April 15, 1841 Reverend Murchison preached his sermon "A New Hope" which became an anthem of early Methodism across America due to its urging for salvation through faith alone without any action on the part of man (the concept called "plain living"). On July 12thof that year cordelle residents voted overwhelmingly (86% to 14%) against secession from Georgia over issues related to slavery and states' rights; this vote helped spur Union forces into battle during the Civil War (Cordele was garrisoned by Confederate troops until May 1865). Afterward many farmers moved back into town as refugees while others founded new businesses such as grocery stores and hardware stores along I-285 outside Of Town limits! Cordeele wasn't abandoned completely during The Great Depression; quite a few people found work at nearby large companies such as GMP & Company or United States Steel Corporation throughout 1933-1939 when those industries underwent difficult times due technological changes happening at warp speed! However cordelle did experience some significant damage during World War II due largely to aerial bombings raids conducted over our town causing extensive destruction including most store fronts lossy gutters being replaced with metal barriers making all light fixtures useless!) But overall things have bounced back pretty strong ever since 🙂 Today Cordeele boasts approximately 10 churches affiliated with various denominations including Evangelical Lutheran Church USA – South Central Association along With several Baptist Churches active! A post office has been open continuously since 1793!!!
