The first settler in Cordele was James Covington, who arrived in 1793. The town began as a cattle and wagon drive on the Chattahoochee River. In 1851, Wm. Fenton donated land to build a school and Presbyterian church in the town center. Cordele had one store and two blacksmiths when it became an incorporated municipality on November 3, 1885. It membership grew to twelve by 1907 when it annexed five other towns: Carthage (1907), Troup (1910), Milledgeville (1920), Prentiss (1925) and Sheffield Heights (1930). In 1933, the Works Progress Administration built a National Guard Armory east of town for use by local forces during World War II. The armory was used until 1946 when it closed down due to lack of funds and vandalism by local teenagers. After the war ended, cordelians destroyed most of the armory’s equipment with help from their government-sponsored Clubs for Community Service program which aimed to improve community morale through patriotic programming In 1972–1973, cordelians formed what is now known as “The Street Gang” which retaliated against members of rival gangs throughout central Catoosa County after various robberies or other confrontations between gangs occurred over marijuana possession or street racing incidents A new police department was established in 1984 with assistance from state troopers under then Superintendent Trooper Don Cline In 1990–1991 Larry Weems served as interim superintendent while they searched for a permanent replacement From 1993 until 1999 there were three interim superintendents before finally being hired permanently with Dranier serving asingtoned Coordinator of Schools from 2001 until 2006 . Current Superintendent Dranier took office on July 1st 2007
The town of Cordele, Georgia was founded on December 12, 1808 by George Rogers Clark. The town was named for General John C. cordeaux who fought in the War of 1812.
