In 1840, cordelite coal (a type of coal) began to be mined here and produced oil for lamps until about 1870 when a local power plant became available for use. From 1870 until it closed in 1935, cordelite production contributed more than $2 million to Fulton County's economy. The first residents of Cordele were three men who had come to Georgia from Tennessee: John Elliott (1801-1872), Israel Putnam (1798-1864), and Ebenezer Scudder (1798-1868). They built their homes on land donated by General Nathan Bedford Forrest. In 1837 James Cordelle married Anna Maria Easley, daughter of Captain John Easley of the Second Regiment Alabama Infantry Volunteers. In 1851, when Georgia became a Confederate States of America country, James Cordelle became one of its first citizens. He served as delegate to the Atlanta Convention that created the Confederate States Bankruptcy Commission and helped organize what is now known as the Atlanta Business Alliance which promoted economic development within Atlanta during the Reconstruction period after the Civil War ended. Daniel Cordelle also played an important role in post-war Georgia life; he served as mayor of Atlanta from 1895 to 1897 and later founded The Coca Cola Company there with his brother John Aiken Cordele Jr.. In 1902 Daniel's son James Aiken Cordele III succeeded him as Mayor of Atlanta; he remains an influential figure in modern Atlanta politics today. In 1906–07 cordeles moved into their own brick schoolhouse that stood on Main Street between Fourth Street South and Fifth Street North until 1957 when it burned down due to weather conditionsoutside instead of being used for education purposes by their students inside their homes like other brick schools throughout southern United States then!
