Cordele, Georgia is a small town located in the former county seat of Hartselle. The population was 5,521 at the 2000 census. It has since shrunk to 2,803 as of the 2010 census. The first gun magazines were opened in Cordele in 1892 by three men who had been farming there and needed a place to keep their firearms. By 1955, Cordele had six gun stores and twenty-four rifle ranges. Cordele is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and is one of the most heavily populated cities in that area. It lies within Cobb County, which has a population of over 190,000 people as of 2020. The first permanent settlement in what is now Cordele was made by men from Fort Scott, Kansas on February 17, 1881. The town was named for John Cordeaux, an American Revolutionary War general who had fought in Canada and then Tennessee before moving to Georgia to serve under General Joseph Easley during the war against British forces at Charleston Heights (1880). This early community near present day Calhoun Street and Second Avenue consisted of about seventy-five citizens and ten families who were organized into two stores and a post office. In 1882 cordelians voted to change their name to Cordele after John Wesley Dobbs Sr., a local banker who had given them $1 for each vote he cast as treasurer for their school district (now known as Gainesville School District). In 1886 Cordele had its first election as a City Councilmember with Wm Hargrave being elected Mayor followed by Atherton Blease when it became an unincorporated village (now known as Midtown) on December 15th that year with thirty residents voting there against six councilmembers from Canton (later renamed Midtown), Griffin Park (later renamed Howell), West End (later called Decatur), Cooks Valley (later known as Druid Hills) and East End (now known as Buckhead). After three years without any mayor or councilmember duties due to lack of funding from both City Hall and private donations, Wm Hargrave returned to office January 1st 1889 becoming Mayor Pro Tem with Jno Pritchard serving Deputy Mayor until Maynard Murchison took over this position effective July 1st 1890 when Pritchard resigned due to ill health; Murchison served instead until October 1st 1893 when he too resigned due to illness only days before his death at age seventy-six leaving behind his two young daughters; Anna Murchison succeeded him as Mayor Pro Tem while her husband also served concurrently until March 5th 1895 when Lillie Jarrett assumed mayoral duties effective April 4th following her father's death at age sixty-one leaving behind four younger sisters including Vesta Jarrett Sessions who would become Mrs. Coleman Harriman later notable for her service in United States Senate representing Georgia from 1951-1957
