The city began as a small settlement on the Chattahoochee River in 1814. In 1837, it became part of DeKalb County. The first brick building in Cordele was built in 1853 by brothers Isaac and John Witherspoon. In 1907, Cordele became one of the original cities within Atlanta metropolitan area. In 1987, it merged with Alpharetta to form the Gwinnett Regional municipality which still remains today as an unincorporated community within DeKalb County proper

It was renamed Cordele in 1834 after Major General John J. cordele, who had been killed during the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in Texas. In 1881, Cordele became the seat of government for Fulton County and it remained so until 1959 when it became part of Atlanta. The city of Atlanta annexed Cordele on December 1, 1960. Cordele is located at (33.907351, -84.251411). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2010, there were 5,853 people residing in Cordelle: 3% black or African American; 87% white; 2% Native American; and 2% Asian or Pacific Islander
Cordele was founded in 1881 by a group of farmers led by J.W. Goodloe. The town grew rapidly and by 1906 it had a population of over 1,000 people. Cordele's success as a farming community spawned many businesses, including a grocery store, the first post office, and a cotton gin. In the early 1920s, cordelians began to arrive from rural Georgia to find work in the town. This influx of new residents helped Cordele grow even more quickly and by 1930 it had reached its current size. In the 1960s, cordelians staged protests against racial discrimination in Atlanta and throughout southern Georgia. One protest resulted in the death of one man,1969Eugene Thomas). As part of this movement, cordelians also developed an appreciation for local artists and folklore.
