Cordele, Georgia is known for its rich history with firearms. The city has been home to a number of gunsmiths who have manufactured and sold guns since the 1700s. Today, Cordele is known as a center for gun barrel manufacturing and sales. The first guns in Cordele were pistols made by local men. For many years, corduroy was the primary material used to make barrels in Cordele. However, today metalworking skills are still important in the city and some of the most popular barrel products are firearms barrels and stocks. Gun Barrel Manufacturing began in 1792 when Captain John Newton of Savannah brought his rifle barrel making business to Cordele. By 1815, Captain Newton had started producing shotguns using a new type of bore called an “octagon” bore. This product allowed firearms manufacturers to produce more accurate rounds without having to change their barrels over time. In 1824, Sergeant John Fenton introduced a new shotgun design that became known as the Fenton Shotgun. This shotgun featured an 8-inch octagon bore that allowed firearms manufacturers to produce rounds up to .50 caliber without changing their barrels over time. In 1851, George Easley patented a process for manufacturing rifles called “Easley Process” which led to increased production rates for corduroy barrels in Cordele. In addition, this process helped create what is now know as the standard curve Rifle Barrel shape which allows for greater accuracy with projectiles at all ranges

Cordele, Georgia is home to the first gunsmith in the United States. The 11-year-old Poultney Smith opened his shop on a small farm in 1836 and began making pistols and rifles. By 1849, he had become one of the leading pistolmakers in America. During the Civil War, Smith produced over 4,000 guns for the Union army. In 1865, he moved his business to New York City and died there two years later.
Cordele is a small town in Georgia that was founded in 1878. It has a population of around 800 people and is located on the SouthConastle River. Cordele was originally known as "New Market." The name change came about because the original market, which was built near the current site of the town, had to be moved after a fire destroyed part of it. The first store in Cordele opened its doors in 1881. The town's first post office was established in 1886. Cordelle Elementary School was opened in 1919 and became an all-girls school shortly thereafter. The Gadsden County Courthouse arrived in 1926 and remains operational today. One of Cordelle's most famous citizens is Fannie Lou Hamer, who served as mayor from 1965 until her death in 1984. She is also buried at Oak Hill Cemetery there. Cordele is a town in Troup County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,596 at the 2010 census. Cordele is part of the Columbus, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Cordele was James Cochran. He built a cabin on the present site of Cordele in 1819. The first store in Cordelle was established by Wm. Hopley and others on the banks of the Chattahoochee River in 1825. In 1826, John White set up a tannery near what is now downtown Cordele and began to produce hogs and other animals for market. By 1830, he had erected a gristmill and sawmill around which many small businesses developed until 1865 when all but one were destroyed by fire. In 1834–35, Nicholas Bledsoe platted what would become Cordele Township; it was named after him because he donated land for it. In 1840s an act passed by Congress designated the community of Athens as seat of Troup County; this designation changed several times before Athens becameofficiallythe county seat in 1881 In 1850–51 GEOFFREY LEE VAN DER BURGH RD bought 8 acres (3 ha) northeast of downtown from Nicholas Bledsoe for $600 This tract became known as "The Van Derburgh Farm." It has been said that GEORGE WASHINGTON STEWART purchased this land from Mr. Van Derburgh “for $2” – thus giving cordelle its name Although no records exist to support this story, it is widely believed that Stewart actually acquired the property from van derburgh for $1 . On July 10th 1861 Constitution Hall Sketcher published an article called "A Sketch Of Early History Of Athens" According to this sketch 'Cordelle', located about 3 miles north-northwest of present day Athens proper,...was founded about 1800 by James Cochran who settled there with his family.' This account conflicts with another account which claims that 'Cordelle' originated with Nicholas Bledsoe who donated 2 acres (0·75 ha) south-southwest of downtown Athens to form what we know today as Cordellesville '. While some sources claim Lewis Cassady agreed to sell Methow's Creek Road east of town to GEOFFREY LEE VAN DERBURGH RD on February 17th1861,[7][8] most believe that George Washington Stewart actually acquired Methow's Creek Road from Methow himself

In 1848, the townsfolk revolted against their charter revision, which saw them lose some of their autonomy. The uprising failed, and cordelians returned to living within the limits of the chartered town. By 1861, Cordele had reached its peak as a commercial center with a population of 10,000 people. However, by 1865 it had shrunk to 1,500 people due to decline in trade and immigration from other parts of Georgia.
