Cordele, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 28,836 at the 2010 census. Cordele is the county seat of Fulton County. The town was founded by General James Wilkinson on May 25, 1811 as Wilkinson's Station on what is now the south side of I-575 near Decatur and Marietta Streets. It became part of Atlanta in 1876 after being part of Cobb County since its establishment in 1835. The first white person to live in Cordele was Major Barclay Richardson in October 1851. In 1915, Cordele began to serve as the capital for Fulton County and remained so until 1967 when Atlanta superseded it as the county seat. In February 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell made his headquarters at Wilkinson's Station while he prepared to invade Union territory along the Chattahoochee River. On April 6th Confederate General Jubal Early arrived at Wilkinson's Station with 515 men and 12 horses and ordered all residents of this station to leave within two hours or face execution. Many people refused to leave their homes due to fear for their safety but eventually most did troop off into exile across the river. During World War II, cordelians served in various capacities including military members (ejection squadrons) and civilian employees of Project Hula (a secret project led by Vice President Truman). After hostilities ceased cordelians were given amnesty from censuses which allowed them back into society although some had difficulty adjusting back into new surroundings after years living under camouflage tape and other secrecy measures
